Pay per click (PPC) is a form of online advertising where advertisers only pay for ads that are actually clicked. When PPC is used in conjunction with search engines, advertisers bid on certain keywords and phrases that internet users are actually searching to find products and services that the advertiser is offering. When the search engine's results are displayed to the user, the advertiser's ads are also displayed. This allows an advertiser to target a user searching for very specific things.
The higher an advertiser bids on a keyword, along with the quality score of the keyword, determines how high their ad appears in the paid search results. PPC is used mainly on search engines, but also on ad networks and some content sites. Currently the largest PPC providers are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter.
